A Personal Word From Larry Hipps

There’s a new movement in the Children’s Ministry today away from traditional ministry methods and techniques. Those who support this movement believe that 21st century children are bored with anything that is not high energy, flashy, full of “bells and whistles,” and lasts more than five minutes. They are convinced that we must approach teaching kids with a “theme park and TV” mentality if we are to get them to listen and respond to any sort of Christian message. Now, please don’t get us wrong, we are all for technology – a lot of churches need to put up the overhead projector and get out the PowerPoint®. And, we’re not against new ways of doing ministry – in fact, if you have ever been to a BTI conference or seminar, you know we encourage those attending to try something they have never done before. We also love having fun – if there’s any place kids should have fun, it’s at church. So, what’s our problem then?We are concerned with the philosophy behind this new style of ministry that emphasizes:
Entertainment over educationSubtleness over substanceChange for the sake of changeTeaching without truthFluff over fundamentals andInstruction without inspiration.
That’s why we want to spotlight traditional ministry in our 2008 Children’s Ministry Conferences. We believe you can have fun and exciting programs without compromising your message, and that you can try new and innovative things and still build on time-honored principles. We will encourage you to update your ministry without downgrading your message. So, if you agree with us, then join us at a conference near you for a day of supporting the values and goals of your Children’s Ministry as you treat your children’s workers to a special occasion of fun, training and enjoyment!Yours in His Certain Victory,Larry HippsConference Host
